Profile
Ted Carter
Ted Carter has been creating landscapes professionally for more than 40 years. His interest in building landscapes and creating outdoor spaces began when he was a child.
Ted prefers the title “ornamental horticulturalist” when describing his vocation. Having gone straight into working for himself upon graduating high school, Ted has honed his craft through years of practical experience and thoughtful refinement.
Ted’s work as a horticulturalist and landscape designer is strongly motivated by his desire to be a thoughtful steward of the Earth. Ted strives to build connections to the natural world for his clients by creating beautiful landscapes that invite engagement and reflection.
Ted Carter in Biodynamic Garden
One of the more practical manifestations of engaging with the natural world is through growing food. Ted built a biodynamic garden at his home as a way of fostering community and sharing the nourishing gifts of the Earth.
The Natural World Is Sacred
When working with clients, Ted draws not only from his practical experience as a horticulturalist, but also invokes the sacred connection to the natural world that all people can access. Ted sees divinity embodied in the world around us and strives to help others connect with the sacred by creating beautiful outdoor spaces and through being mindful of our responsibilities to protect the natural world.
Motivated by their desire to address the climate crisis, Ted and Ellen Gunter coauthored the book, Earth Calling: A Climate Change Handbook for the 21st Century (North Atlantic Books, 2014). Copies of the book are available through Amazon or can be ordered through an independent bookstore.
